Rhayader is the oldest town in mid Wales.

 

Rhayader or Rhaeadr Gwy means Waterfall on the Wye and yes Rhayader does have a waterfall and is the first town along the River Wye. Rhayader dates back to the 5th century and even has some Neolithic remains.The town once was a natural stopping point for monks, drovers and mail coaches. It remains a favoured place for its cosy streets of interesting shops, gallery, markets, craft workshops, leisure centre, cafes and friendly pubs. The town trail and riverside walk are delightful. There is a children’s play area and a perfect picnic spot beside the river.
